Ronan Point, 1968

Ronan Point 1968. Canning Town. Newham. East London.

I photographed Ronan Point when I was a student in the Fine Art Department at Goldsmiths College and the day after it had collapsed.

The disaster led to a loss of public confidence in high-rise residential buildings and resulted in major changes in UK building regulations.

I could not believe my eyes when I photographed this building , for next door on the same plot ofland , they were continuing to build exact replicas of Ronan Point which was obviously a very flawed design .

Ronan Point was a disaster waiting to happen through ignorance and greed ; and it is still happening 50 years later at Grenfell Towers.

The resonance of a destroyed building holds inherent memories which are too painful for me to witness and record.

Demolished Apartments in Tower Hamlets, 2018

The original photos have been through several processes which echo the destruction of the building its self.

The final stage of making these images was an experiment involving the 35mill spool of negatives being dropped into a jar of water, taken out and dried and then printed .

The prints were then exhibited in a derelict house in 2018 which was in turn, waiting to be demolished after the end of the exhibition.
